🌊 Chapter 6: The Tides of Change

Summer had quietly wrapped the city in its warm embrace. The golden rays of the morning sun filtered through the trees, painting every street with a soft glow. The air carried the fragrance of blooming jasmine and wet grass after the previous night's drizzle. For everyone around her, it was the season of fresh beginnings, college admissions, new dreams, and endless possibilities.

But for Kiara, summer felt different.

It was beautiful, yet strangely incomplete.

Ever since that evening at the café, one unfinished conversation had settled deep inside her heart like an unanswered melody.

"I've been thinking about... us."

Rishi's words echoed in her mind almost every day.

What had he wanted to say?

Why had he stopped?

And why did those three unfinished words make her heart race every single time she remembered them?

Whenever these questions became too heavy, she turned toward the only place where her heart found peace.

Her music.

Every morning, before beginning the admission formalities, Kiara sat beside the small idol of Kanha Ji in her room. With folded hands and closed eyes, she whispered a quiet prayer before picking up her guitar.

Music had always been her language when words failed her.

Today, however, every note carried someone else's name.

Rishi.

Even her mother, Shweta, noticed the subtle change in her daughter.

"You've been smiling less these days, Kiara."

Kiara forced a small smile.

"I'm just tired, Maa."

Shweta gently stroked her hair.

"Tired hearts don't hide behind smiles."

Kiara looked away before her mother could notice the tears threatening to appear.

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Rishi sat inside his office on the top floor of the Oberoi Gold Corporation headquarters.

Stacks of important files lay untouched before him.

Meetings continued.

Phones rang.

People came and left.

Yet his attention remained somewhere else.

On a girl whose smile had unknowingly become the calmest part of his chaotic life.

His trusted associate entered carefully.

"Boss... the investors are waiting."

Rishi looked up.

"I'm coming."

But he didn't move.

The associate hesitated before speaking again.

"You've been distracted lately."

Rishi's sharp gaze immediately silenced him.

Yet after a long pause...

He simply sighed.

"...I know."

For perhaps the first time in years, the feared Mafia of Gold admitted that something was beyond his control.

Or rather...

Someone.

A week later, destiny smiled upon them once again.

Kiara arrived at the university to complete her admission formalities, her heart filled with excitement for a new beginning.

At the very same time, Rishi reached the campus as the son of one of the university's trustees, attending an important administrative meeting regarding an upcoming industry collaboration project.

Neither of them had the slightest idea that fate had chosen the same day, the same campus, and the same moment to bring them together once again.

Sometimes destiny doesn't announce its arrival.

It simply lets two hearts meet beneath the same sky.

The same sky.

Kiara stared at the admission letter with sparkling eyes.

A smile slowly appeared on her face.

Maybe fate wasn't so cruel after all.

The first day of college arrived.

The campus buzzed with excitement.

Freshers wandered through the corridors with nervous laughter.

Student clubs decorated colourful stalls.

Music echoed from the auditorium while seniors welcomed newcomers.

Kiara stepped through the grand entrance wearing a simple pastel blue kurti with white palazzos. Her long hair flowed freely in the gentle breeze, and a small silver pendant designed as heart rested against her neck.

She looked effortlessly beautiful.

Without realizing it...

Many eyes turned toward her.

Someone noticed those lingering glances.

And instantly disliked them.

Standing near the administrative block, dressed in a crisp black shirt with rolled sleeves, Rishi watched the scene quietly.

His jaw tightened.

He wasn't jealous.

He simply hated the way strangers looked at her.

Kiara spotted him from a distance.

Their eyes met.

No words.

No waves.

Only small smiles that somehow said everything.

She walked toward him.

"So..."

Rishi spoke first.

"First day."

She laughed softly.

"I'm trying not to look nervous."

"You look fine."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Only fine?"

For a brief second, Rishi forgot how to breathe.

"You look..."

He paused.

"...beautiful."

Kiara blinked.

The compliment caught her completely off guard.

A faint blush coloured her cheeks.

"You actually noticed?"

"I notice more than you think."

She lowered her eyes, unable to stop smiling.

"You're impossible."

"And yet..."

His voice softened.

"...you still came looking for me."

Before she could answer, a distracted student accidentally collided with her shoulder.

The coffee cup in her hand slipped.

Instinctively, Rishi caught it before a single drop spilled.

His other hand gently steadied her by holding her elbow.

"You really don't know how to take care of yourself, do you?"

Kiara looked at him with mock annoyance.

"And whose fault is it that I'm distracted?"

A rare smile escaped Rishi.

For a moment...

The noisy campus faded away.

It felt as though the entire world had paused just to watch them.

They began walking together toward the main academic block.

Students brushed past them from every direction.

Suddenly, a large group rushed down the staircase.

Before Kiara could react, Rishi instinctively pulled her gently toward him to shield her from the crowd.

She stumbled slightly.

Her forehead almost touched his shoulder.

For one suspended heartbeat...

Neither moved.

Kiara could hear his heartbeat.

Steady.

Strong.

Safe.

Embarrassed, she quickly stepped back.

"Sorry..."

Rishi shook his head.

"You don't have to apologize."

His eyes searched hers for a moment longer than necessary.

"Just... stay close."

Something about those words made warmth spread through Kiara's heart.

Not because they were romantic.

But because they felt genuine.

For the first time in a long while...

She felt an unknown peace.

They reached the old banyan tree near the music club and sat together on the stone bench beneath its shade.

A cool breeze played with Kiara's hair, sending loose strands across her face.

As she tried to brush them away, Rishi reached out instinctively and gently tucked one strand behind her ear.

His fingers barely grazed her skin.

The touch lasted only a second.

Yet it sent an unfamiliar flutter through both their hearts.

Neither spoke.

Neither looked away.

For that one quiet moment, the world around them seemed to disappear.

Neither of them noticed that, from a distance, a pair of watchful eyes had already begun following their every move.

Hidden behind the shade of another tree stood a man dressed in a black hoodie, his gaze fixed on the two of them.

Kabir Malhotra.

For months, he had been observing Rishi from the shadows.

Rishi Singh Oberoi—the man feared across business circles and the underworld alike, known as the "Mafia of Gold." A man who never smiled, never hesitated, and never let emotions cloud his judgment.

Yet today...

Kabir had seen something he had never imagined possible.

Rishi smiled.

Not because of money.

Not because of victory.

But because of Kiara.

Kabir's lips slowly curved into a sinister smile.

"So..."

"Even the mighty have a weakness."

"And every weakness can be broken."

He quietly slipped away, already planning the first move of a game neither Kiara nor Rishi knew had begun.

Unaware of the danger lurking around them, Kiara and Rishi continued walking through the campus.

The music club had announced auditions for freshers, and students gathered near the auditorium.

"You'll definitely participate," Rishi said.

Kiara looked at him in surprise.

"What if I don't get selected?"

Rishi stopped walking and looked straight into her eyes.

"You will," Rishi replied with complete confidence.

Kiara tilted her head.

"You're that sure?"

He nodded.

"I've heard you sing."

A tiny pout formed on her lips.

"And?"

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"People don't forget voices like yours."

She lowered her gaze, trying to hide the blush that instantly coloured her cheeks.

"You're becoming very generous with compliments today."

"I'm only stating facts."

She laughed softly.

"And who told the Mafia of Gold how to encourage people?"

"You did."

She looked at him, confused.

"When?"

"The day you smiled at me without asking who I was."

For a second, silence settled between them.

Kiara looked away, trying to hide the blush spreading across her cheeks.

To lighten the moment, she nudged his shoulder gently.

"You've changed."

Rishi raised an eyebrow.

"For better or worse?"

She smiled.

"I haven't decided yet."

For the first time in years, Rishi laughed openly.

The sound was rare.

Warm.

Real.

And it made Kiara's heart skip a beat.

Just then, a cheerful feminine voice interrupted the moment.

"Rishi!"

Both of them turned.

A young woman in a neatly pressed white kurti and navy-blue trousers walked toward them confidently.

She carried a file in one hand and wore an ID card around her neck.

She smiled brightly.

"I can't believe it's actually you!"

Rishi looked up.

A flicker of recognition crossed his face.

"Amrita."

She laughed.

"So you do remember me."

"How could I forget? It's been a long time."

Amrita smiled warmly.

"It has. I heard you're handling the university's industry collaboration project this semester."

"I am."

"And you're still as serious as ever."

Rishi gave a faint smile.

"You haven't changed either."

Kiara stood quietly beside him.

Amrita finally noticed her.

"Oh! I'm sorry."

She extended her hand politely.

"Hi, I'm Amrita Sharma. We were college colleagues and worked on several academic projects together."

Kiara returned the smile.

"Hi... I'm Kiara."

"It's nice meeting you."

"You too."

Everything seemed perfectly normal.

Professional.

Friendly.

Nothing more.

But fate had already begun weaving another story.

A few minutes later, Amrita handed Rishi a project file about the college.

"These documents need your signature. The Principal has already approved them."

As Rishi opened the folder, Amrita leaned closer to point at a document.

At that exact moment, a gust of wind folded the collar of Rishi's shirt.

Without thinking, Amrita adjusted it casually.

"There."

"Still as careless as before."

Rishi didn't even notice the gesture.

He remained focused on the paperwork.

From where Kiara stood, it looked harmless.

Until someone spoke beside her.

"Looks like they're still close."

Kiara turned.

A man stood beside her.

It was Kabir.

Though she had never seen him before.

"You know them?" he asked casually.

Kiara shook her head.

"No."

Kabir sighed dramatically.

"I thought everyone knew."

"Knew what?"

He hesitated, pretending to choose his words carefully.

"I probably shouldn't say this."

Kiara frowned.

"What is it?"

Kabir lowered his voice.

"Amrita and Rishi have always been close."

"They've worked together for years."

"Most people thought they'd eventually end up together."

Kiara felt something tighten painfully inside her chest.

Kabir continued.

"Honestly..."

"They look perfect together."

As if destiny wanted to complete the illusion, Amrita laughed at something Rishi said.

The sound reached Kiara before his words did.

Her smile slowly disappeared.

Kabir looked at her with fake sympathy.

"I'm sorry if I ruined your day."

Then he walked away.

Leaving behind a storm.

Kiara stood frozen.

She wanted to believe Rishi.

She wanted to believe the warmth in his eyes.

The quiet way he looked after her.

The gentle way he had tucked her hair behind her ear only moments ago.

But doubt had entered her heart.

And doubt had a cruel habit of growing louder than truth.

Without saying a word...

She quietly walked away.

That evening, she locked herself inside her room.

The guitar rested untouched beside her bed.

Instead, she sat before Kanha Ji's idol.

Her hands trembled as tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"Kanha Ji..."

"I never asked You for attachment like this."

"So why does it hurt this much?"

She wiped her tears.

"I should've remembered..."

"People like him belong in a different world."

"And girls like me..."

"...should never dream beyond their place."

Her voice broke.

"But why does my heart refuse to listen?"

The room echoed with silence.

Only the sound of her quiet sobs remained.

The next morning, Rishi was standing outside her classroom.

The moment Kiara saw him...

She looked away.

He smiled softly.

"Good morning."

No response.

She walked past him.

"Kiara?"

She didn't stop.

Throughout the day, she spoke to classmates, thanked professors, and smiled politely at everyone.

Everyone...

Except him.

Her silence wasn't loud.

It was cold.

It carried disappointment far deeper than anger.

Rishi couldn't understand.

He replayed every conversation in his mind.

Every smile.

Every word.

Nothing explained the distance that had suddenly appeared between them.

Three days passed.

Nothing changed.

Rishi barely slept.

Meetings ended early.

Files remained unsigned.

Even his closest associates noticed.

"You don't look alright, Boss."

He stared out of the window.

"I'm not."

It was the truth.

The one person who had unknowingly brought peace into his life was now avoiding him without explanation.

Unable to bear it any longer, Rishi drove straight to Kiara's house that evening.

His heartbeat was strangely unsteady.

Shweta opened the door.

"Oh, Rishi beta."

"Is Kiara home?"

She smiled gently.

"She's in her room."

He nodded.

"May I...?"

"Go."

Rishi knocked softly.

The door opened.

Kiara stood before him.

The moment he looked into her eyes...

His heart clenched.

They were red.

Swollen.

She had cried.

Not once.

Not for a moment.

But for hours.

His voice softened immediately.

"Kiara..."

"What happened?"

She stepped back.

"You shouldn't have come."

His brows knitted together.

"I've been looking for you."

"You don't need to."

"I do."

She shook her head.

"No."

A bitter smile appeared on her lips.

"You have someone else to worry about."

Rishi frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"You don't need to know."

He blinked.

Rishi took a hesitant step forward.

"Kiara... please don't cry."

His voice was softer than she had ever heard before.

"I can face the entire world without fear... but I can't bear seeing tears in your eyes."

He searched her face desperately.

"Please..."

"At least tell me what I've done."

"If I've made a mistake, let me correct it."

Her voice trembled despite her efforts to stay strong.

"Don't pretend you don't understand."

Kiara looked at him one last time.

There was love in her eyes.

But today...

Love was buried beneath disappointment.

Without another word, she slowly closed the door.

The sound echoed through the silent hallway.

Rishi remained standing outside, unable to move.

Questions raced through his mind.

What had changed?

Why was she crying?

What had he done to deserve this distance?

For the first time in years, Rishi Singh Oberoi—the man everyone feared—felt completely helpless.

Across the street, inside a black SUV, Kabir watched the scene unfold through the windshield.

A satisfied smile crept across his face.

"The first crack was easy," he whispered.

"Now..."

"...I'll make sure they never find their way back to each other."

He started the engine and disappeared into the darkness.

Unaware that someone was pulling the strings from the shadows, Rishi stood frozen outside Kiara's house, while Kiara cried silently on the other side of the door.

Neither of them knew that this misunderstanding was only the beginning.

The tides had begun to change... and the storm had only just arrived.
